Kehewin Cree Nation sought to train its leaders in asset management and redevelop the nation’s existing asset management program. The goal was to better understand the asset base and budgets, refine decision making and communication regarding maintenance, replacement, and addition of assets, and optimize the lifecycle, service levels, and costs of assets. The project would also help mitigate health and safety risks in the community due to aging assets, while delivering the asset management plan in a cost-effective manner.

MNP delivered training based on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Municipal Asset Management Program to the nation’s leadership. The team then assessed the current state of asset management including inventory lists of existing assets, short- and long-term plans in place, and current service levels definitions, through interviews with the nation’s asset owners and leadership. MNP presented a strategic roadmap to the nation’s leadership on addressing gaps identified in its asset management planning function, and realigning future plans with its vision.

MNP’s detailed gap analysis of the nation’s asset management program and roadmap helped leadership better understand the full scope of its assets, the training and maintenance plans required to optimize them, and the governance and reporting structure required to ensure alignment to the asset management plan. This work kickstarted the implementation of new asset management practices to better deliver assets and services to the community.
