MNP has become aware of a sweepstakes scam that uses the good name of Coast Capital Savings Credit Union and the return address of MNP's Surrey, BC office in order to trick individuals into sending money. Neither Coast Capital Savings Credit Union nor Meyers Norris Penny LLP is involved in the "Lloyd Branson Law Firm Associate & Sweepstake Inc." annual sweepstakes, which is entirely fictional.
This scam is being delivered by mail. Targets of the fraud receive a letter, addressed to them, advising that they have won $380,000 US. A cheque for $7,100.00 US is included with the letter "to cover all your legal costs and any other incidental expenses" and the target is told to deposit the cheque and to contact a certain individual to "assist you with acquiring the balance of your prize winnings."
DO NOT DEPOSIT THE CHEQUE, CONTACT ANY INDIVIDUAL, OR SEND ANY MONEY.
This is a fraud.
If you have deposited the cheque and sent money as requested, please contact The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll free at 1.888.495.8501 or via e-mail at email@example.com
