MNP careers are Different by Design. As an entrepreneurial firm, we truly believe there are no limits to where your career can go.
We all want to do business with people we know, like and trust. In this Q&A, find out how one conversation changed Kam Sandhu’s career trajectory.
Q: Did you always want to become an accountant?
I always wanted to be in business. My parents used to operate convenience stores when I was young and I used to help them with that. I just loved helping people when they came in. Then, my dad started his own contracting company and I watched him grow it from a small company to more than 500 employees.
I went to university with a focus on science, but in my first year, I wasn't connecting with the classes. In my second semester, I had friends taking general business courses and joined them. I ended up struggling in an introductory accounting class, and it was one of the best things that could have happened to me.
My professor sat me down and told me I wasn't going to pass, but he wanted to help me. He said, "when you're ready, let's reconnect and talk about what your plan is." In the following summer, I followed up and my professor told me to think of a Chartered Accountant Designation as a way to open a lot of doors in the business world.
He helped me realize that becoming an accountant could be a way to work in business and help people, just like I enjoyed when I was younger. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be an accountant.
Q: What is your role with MNP?
I help build capacity in First Nation communities all across Vancouver Island and Northern B.C. My role ranges from providing assurance services to being an external financial advisor to facilitating training strategies. This also includes providing project management services and creating customized individual learning plans for finance staff. In a nutshell, I’m a Business Advisor that helps First Nation communities achieve their strategic vision for their community.
Q: How would you characterize your professional self?
I really like to invest myself in the communities I work with. I bring my team on client tours because it helps us to better understand who we are working with . I will ask for invitations to go to traditional village sites and have a meal with these communities. For me, it's really about building a relationship.
I focus on determining the deliverable for the client, so we are always working towards the exact outcome that the client wants. To reach our deliverables, we need to empower the staff we're working with and having them understand how one small piece fits into the bigger picture.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I love to be outside. I picked up mountain biking and really enjoyed it over the past four or five months. My social life involves my work too. I attend a lot of functions with my clients.
Finish this sentence: If I bought a new motorcycle, it would be…
Royal Enfield Bullet 500. When I was 13 or 14, I travelled to India with my family. A lot of guys had this motorcycle and I loved it. I've always wanted one since then.
