MNP careers are Different by Design. As an entrepreneurial firm, we truly believe there are no limits to where your career can go.
We all want to do business with people we know, like and trust. In this Q&A, find out how Sanci Solbakken CPA, CA, started as an Arts major in university and is now a Partner at MNP in Victoria.
Q: What is your role with MNP?
I am a partner in our Victoria office and I work closely with professionals – almost all of my clients are doctors, dentists and other professionals.
I've always prided myself on being proactive with my clients, especially when it comes to tax planning. For me, it's about more than just producing financial statements and tax returns. I want to be a trusted business advisor for my clients, assisting them with decision-making and planning for the future.
Q: Did you always want to become an accountant?
I actually started my education in a very different space. I have an Anthropology and Sociology degree. I was struggling to find a job in my field and I started to do some bookkeeping at a bar I worked at. And it went from there.
I had a good friend who was in the Chartered Accounting program and recommended I look in to it. I had to start from scratch but it was totally worth it. During my Bachelor of Arts degree, I had worked a lot with statistics during my research. The numbers always came easy to me.
Q: How would you characterize your professional self?
I work hard to communicate with clients in a way that is clear and easy to understand. Taxation and finance can be complex, but I take pride in simplifying business solutions and challenges to give my clients confidence and clarity.
I aim to be professional but approachable. I want to know about more than just my client's business – their families, their interests – who they are so I can really be that trusted advisor.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I do a lot of yoga, both indoors and outdoors. I paddleboard a lot in the summer and I've recently taken golf a lot more seriously than I used to. I have two kids that are 18 and 20, and they're pretty self-sufficient.
I love entertaining too. I host dinner parties all the time and do a lot of wine tastings, especially Okanagan wines.
Finish this sentence: If I bought a new car, it would be…
I drive an SUV day to day, so I would buy a Nissan 380Z for a change. It's a cool sportscar, low to the ground, handles well. It would be my fun car - with just enough space for a small suitcase and some golf clubs. It's the perfect car for driving up the island.
