Selected North American Active Rig Counts

U.S. active oil rigs continued to fall on a week-over-week basis across the U.S. and in North Dakota. At 640 Baker Hughes reports rigs targeting oil have declined for the fifth week in a row and are now at the same levels as early July.

Canada, on the other hand, has 195 active which is the fourth consecutive active rig count weekly increase. As of September 25, six of the seven top operators were still drilling deep in northwest Alberta and northeast B.C. Most of the rigs employed are rated to 3,700 meters and deeper. The exception is Crescent Point which has fired back up in recent weeks. Twelve of its 14 active rigs are drilling wells of 1,850 metres total length or less.
