With several months of lockdown under our belt, Canada’s vibrant events industry continues to bear the brunt of COVID-19. Event production companies have been forced to explore new ways of producing events that enable business development while still acting in compliance with health protocols. Fortunately, this shift in mindset has led to some incredible innovations and creative solutions that help communities stay connected and businesses to generate revenue.

When George Wong and Rahul Goel were in school, they loved attending conferences together, but felt the industry itself was lacking in tech innovation.
According to Wong, “as we stumbled into events, we realized that this industry was really non-innovative at all. All these players popped up in the events technology space around 10-15 years ago, and the way they have grown in this industry has been through acquisitions. They weren’t building their tech from the ground up, which led to a lot of usability issues, and an opportunity for us”. PheedLoop has spent the last five years listening to early adopters of their products and creating features tailored to them. Delivering both virtual and live events requires a seamless user experience, from ticketing to speaker acquisition, and from presentation management to connecting with other attendees. PheedLoop has been able to deliver on these key features and more.
Wong believes that events are incredible opportunities for community building. For that to happen successfully, planners must be intentional about the value they are delivering for the variety of stakeholders they are hosting, while providing all players with a memorable experience.
According to Wong, even online, there is a strong appetite to share experiences with others in real-time. One only has to look at the popularity of live streaming during COVID-19 to see this.
Wong is also seeing an increase in the production values for online events through audio design, broadcast quality animation, and the inclusion of programming features like live DJ’s.
Finally, Wong believes that when live events resume, event planners will embrace a hybrid model that delivers both virtual and live elements. “This is huge for planners, because the biggest thing before was centered on creating community and having that community in person, but you might be able to create that community both online and in-person. This creates endless sponsorship opportunities, endless networking opportunities.”
