Get to know Todd Myles

Serving Kelowna’s real estate and construction sector

A Chartered Professional Accountant and senior manager at MNP, Todd Myles focuses on the real estate and construction sector but also works with other businesses across the Okanagan region. We connected with Todd in his Kelowna office to discover if accounting has always been his passion, how he works with clients, and more.

Did you always want to be an accountant?

No, I did not. When I went to university, I wanted to be a doctor. I changed my mind and graduated with a history degree. I was working and realizing that a degree doesn’t mean you’re going to get a good job. My roommate was taking accounting and I decided to take some intro-level classes and did pretty well at it. It wasn’t a surprise; I always liked math.

Why real estate and construction?

It’s a very broad niche so I get to deal with a lot of different types of businesses and people. I like the variety and it’s a huge contributor to the local economy.

Describe your approach when it comes to helping clients.

For many of our clients, the accounting side of things is a necessary evil. They’re either not interested in it or they’re not comfortable with it and consequently ignore it out of that discomfort. I try to help them navigate this part of their business to not only ensure their accounting is clear and accurate but also to emphasize the importance it plays in making their business successful.

What are your clients’ biggest challenges in the current economy?

Keeping up with rising costs and finding and retaining employees. It’s important for me to be proactive so that clients dealing with these challenges can get on top of them before it’s too late. I encourage my clients to talk to me about what’s going on because although I may not have all the answers, I have likely learned something from another client or a colleague that could make a major difference to them.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I like getting to understand my client’s situation and then identifying a solution that will help. I always make sure that I explain the benefits of the solution in a way that they understand so that the investment makes sense to them, and I enjoy that communication aspect of my work.

What do you do when you’re not working?

My wife and I have three children under the age of 11 so there isn’t a lot of time that isn’t spent with my family. I enjoy coaching the kids’ sports team and like to play sports when I can. I used to volunteer on boards but those days are over until the kids are older.
