Liguo (Cooper) is a member of MNP’s Specialty Tax Services team in Calgary. With more than a decade of public accounting experience and an extensive focus on international tax, he helps private business owners, professional corporation shareholders, and high-net-worth individuals and families optimize cross-border tax matters through strategic planning and a balanced consideration of tax laws in both Canada and the U.S.

Cooper works closely with a wide range of clients, including dual citizens living in Canada, real estate businesses, family trust and holding corporations, U.S. shareholders of professional corporations, Canadian investors holding U.S. vacation and rental properties, and corporate executives.

His services include Canadian and U.S. individual income tax compliance and planning; U.S. estate and gift tax compliance and planning; cross-border mergers and acquisitions, as well as business ownership strategies; and U.S. citizen residency in Canada. They also include Internal Revenue Service and Canada Revenue Agency voluntary disclosure tax compliance for catch-up filers; U.S. real estate investment strategy advisory and Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA) withholding tax matters; tax advisory on U.S. citizenship renunciation and Green Card abandonment; Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) compliance; and executive compensation tax issues (stock options, restrictive stock units, pensions).

Prior to joining MNP, Cooper worked at two of the Big Four firms, as a senior manager and partner.
