Who is Gurdesh Bhandar?

Gurdesh Bhandar is a Chartered Professional Accountant and Partner who’s worked in the Tri-Cities for six years. While she and her husband live on Burnaby Mountain, they frequent the Tri-Cities to enjoy the many shops, restaurants and outdoor activities it has to offer (favourites include the Poirier Street Farmers Market and going to kid-friendly breweries like Yellow Dog and Bakery). We talked to Gurdesh in MNP’s Port Moody office to find out more about her, how she works with clients, and what’s great about the Tri-Cities.

Did you always want to become an accountant?

In Grade 11 we looked at different career options and accounting stood out to me. It sounded appealing, and it turns out I really enjoy it. I like meeting deadlines and I really like helping clients achieve their business goals. Business owners are so busy with the day-to-day operations, so it’s nice to be able to support them with their accounting needs and provide them with timely, relevant information and recommendations so they can make sound business decisions.

What kinds of clients do you work with?

I work with clients in a variety of industries, including professionals such as doctors and dentists, and business owners in property management and retail.

How do you describe your professional self?

Friendly and approachable. I like to pick up the phone and talk to clients. Every interaction is an opportunity to discover what they need and tailor solutions that will help them achieve their goals.

What are your clients’ biggest challenges right now?

A big challenge for many clients is staffing shortages, and we help with that by providing consulting services to help them utilize technology to fill some of these gaps. We can also provide recommendations for payroll service providers, internal bookkeeping services, and others to help fill those gaps. And of course, we provide tax planning to reduce the amount tax they’re paying so they have more cash flow to invest and expand their business.

How are you involved in the community?

I like to support the community by shopping in the area. Also, our office likes to hold our team building events locally — kayaking at Rocky Point, visiting Mariner Brewing, or rock climbing in Coquitlam, for example.

We’ve already mentioned some of your favourite things to do in the Tri-Cities. Are there any others?

We enjoy the many outdoor activities in and around the Tri-Cities. A favourite is biking around Rocky Point with my kids — these rides typically include a meal at Pajo’s Fish and Chips and end with a cone from Rocky Point Ice Cream. My children also take dance classes at Dance Force in Coquitlam and gymnastics at Club Aviva in Coquitlam. It’s a great place to work and spend time in. We just love it.
